  • FAQ

How Are Condoms Made and What Are They Made Of?

Condoms are made from latex, a natural material derived from rubber trees. The manufacturing process involves several steps:

    • Latex extraction: Rubber trees are tapped to collect latex.
    • Refining: The latex is concentrated and purified.
    • Chemical treatment: Improves durability.
    • Vulcanisation: Makes the latex elastic and strong.
    • Shaping: Moulds are dipped into latex to form condoms.
    • Testing: Each condom is electrically tested to ensure it is intact.

At RFSU’s factory and laboratory, condoms are tested, packaged and distributed.

    How Long Have Condoms Existed?

Condoms have been used for thousands of years, although materials and purposes have changed over time.

    • 2000 years ago: The Chinese used oiled silk paper.
    • Middle Ages: In Japan, leather was used, while Europeans used linen, animal intestines and fish bladders.
    • 16th century: Condom use increased when syphilis spread in Europe following Columbus’s voyages.
    • 18th century: Giacomo Casanova used inflated animal intestine condoms to check for leaks.
    • 1839: Charles Goodyear discovered the vulcanisation of rubber, making elastic condoms possible.
    • 1930s: Modern latex condoms began to be mass-produced, becoming more affordable and accessible.
    • 20th century: Condom use increased during the birth control debate and again in the 1980s when HIV became a global epidemic.

In Sweden, condoms were long controversial. The Contraception Act (1910–1970) prohibited information about contraceptives, but doctors eventually convinced parliament that condoms were necessary to combat sexually transmitted infections. Today, condoms are the only contraceptive that protect against both pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections.

Can I Use a Condom in a Sauna?

Yes, condoms are not affected by short-term heat during use. It is prolonged storage above 50°C that can reduce durability.

Can Condoms Be Damaged by Cold?

No, cold does not damage condoms. Simply allow them to return to room temperature before use. High heat, however, can be harmful as it may reduce elasticity.

How Long Does a Condom Last?

The shelf life is 5 years from the date of manufacture. Always check the expiry date on the packaging.

What Lubricant Is Used on Condoms?

All RFSU condoms (except condom 17006) have a silicone-based lubricant. This helps to:

    1. Keep the condom flexible and easy to roll on.
    2. Prevent the condom from drying out during storage.

    Are RFSU Condoms Vegan?

Yes, RFSU products are vegan. RFSU condoms contain no animal-derived additives.
